Lanzarote is the easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands sitting 125 kilometres from the African coast and over 1,000 kilometres from the Spanish mainland the island is 60 kilometres from north to south, and roughly 25 kilometres wide. With a population of 139,000 Lanzarote is the 3rd most populated island in the Canaries after Tenerife, and Gran Canaria.

Volcanic in origin the island cannot be described as picturesque but it does have a dramatic moon-like appeal after being devastated by a series of eruptions during the 1730’s leaving huge area’s buried under lava. A must see on the island is Timanfaya National Park home to the volcanos that formed the island and left it with the lunar landscape that you see today. The best time to visit is in the early evening with the sun gently sinking into the sea shadows cast across the mountains produce some stunning purples and pinks that make for excellent photographs.
The island caters to a diverse group of tourists with your beer swilling Brits more likely to be found in Puerto Del Carmen and Costa Teguise parts of the island yet away from the resorts there is a wide range of places to stay including some wonderful boutique hotels, and eco-friendly accommodation that will make you feel as if you are the only tourist in Lanzarote.
Getting to Lanzarote
Almost all the U.K. low-cost airlines fly to Lanzarote with Easyjet having daily departures from Gatwick. Lanzarote airport (ACE) is located in the east of the island close to the town of Arrecife, and only six miles from the main resort of Puerto Del Carmen.
Excursions are available to all the main attractions on the island, and there is a bus service that connects the towns. If however you would like to explore the island then you really should consider renting a car.
