Hawaii is filled with so many amazing and interesting things that you could spend years exploring all of its islands. Because it is so far away from any other civilization it has developed many unique characteristics in its culture, plant life and animal life. A comprehensive list of all the things that are unique to Hawaii would be almost never ending so here are 8 of the most remarkable:
1. The world’s most active volcano
The Big Island’s Kilauea Volcano has almost continuously erupted since 1983. According to the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, these lava flows have added over 568 acres of new land and covered over eight miles of highway with lava as deep as 115 feet. Witnessing Kilauea Volcano in action is one of the most amazing sights anyone can see.
Hawaii’s state bird. This type of goose is unique to Hawaii and can be found on all of the islands with the exception of Oahu. The bird is endangered, which makes it even more unlikely to see it anywhere other than Hawaii.
3. Happy faced spider

This non-poisonous spider lives in the rainforest areas of Hawaii. The red spot on its back looks surprising similar to a large smile. The spider is only natural to the Hawaiian Islands of Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Hawaii’s Big Island.
4. Hula dancing
Hula is a form of dance accompanied by the words of a chant. It was developed by the Polynesians in the Pacific islands. There are several mythical stories regarding the formation of Hula. One of the most interesting stories describes how Pele, the goddess of fire, was trying to flee the grasp of her sister, the goddess of the oceans, until she found an island where the ocean waves could not reach her. There in the center of the island of Hawaii she danced the first hula to signify that she had finally won.
5. The only royal residence in the United States
The Iolani Palace on Oahu has one very big claim to fame – it’s the only official state residence of royalty in the United States. This royal residence was built in 1882 when Hawaii was under monarch rule. Visitors can tour the Palace in historic downtown Honolulu.
The name of Hawaii’s state fish literally means, “trigger fish with a snout like a pig.” The fish was made the official state fish in 1984 after an extensive campaign was led by Hawaii’s school children. The humuhumunukunukuapuaa is only found in the waters of the central and south Pacific Ocean. This is not the only type of fish that is unique to Hawaii. About 24.3% of the fish around Hawaii are only found there. That makes Hawaii the place with the highest number of unique fish in the world.
7. Yellow hibiscus
The yellow Hibiscus is Hawaii’s state flower. The plant of this beautiful flower can reach up to 30 feet tall. The flower is usually about 4 to 6 inches in diameter. What makes this flower so special is that it is only found on the Hawaiian Island and it is endangered. The island of Kauai especially has many of these beautiful flowers. Blooming season for the hibiscus is during the summer.
8. The Paniolo

The paniolo is the Hawaiian version of the cowboy. Infused with Hawaiian tradition, these cowboys wear leis and play the ukulele. If you are interested in learning more about the Paniolo tradition while on a visit in Hawaii then you can pay a visit to the Bishop museum on Hawaii’s Big Island.
