Chengdu is the capital of the Sichuan province in China. An urban city, Chengdu has over 11 million people and is a popular area for visiting due to its historical background and large economic influence. If you are planning a long trip to China or else it’s a short visit and want to stay away from the more touristic cities, Chengdu would be a perfect landing spot. There are a lot of fun activities you can do there, but here are five to get you started.

Being the natural habitat of panda bears, a visit to the Wolong Panda Reserve is a must in Chengdu. Panda bears have been considered endangered since 1980, and this reserve helps to learn about, re-populate and breed pandas so they won’t be endangered anymore. This nature reserve is a beautiful looking place that you can go to learn about pandas and other animals of interest that are native to the area of Sichuan China.

For another beautiful area to visit and take pictures, go to Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area. This area has it all: forest, valleys, and snowy mountains. Calcium carbonate formations resemble a golden dragon winding through the forest. Along the valley is the eye-catching waterfall Feipuliuhui. This scenic area is a great place to visit in the winter too where the snow and ice forms a magical scene. To visit the area in peak season (April-November) it costs CNY 200 and in nonpeak season only CNY 60 (November-March).

Creative folks will love this next landmark of Du Fu, a famous Tang Dynasty poet. You can visit the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu which is a beautiful place to look at his bronzed sculpture and take many pictures. His poems are treasured Chinese literature. It costs CNY 60 to get into the cottage and is easily accessible by bus.

Those into Chinese history will love visiting the Martial Marquis Memorial Temple (Wu Hou Ci). This memorial is dedicated to the courageous man Zhuge Liang who was a soldier in the Shu army during the Three Kingdoms Period. It is built next to the temple of Liu Bei, emperor of Shu. While at the temple, you must see the amazing Triple-Success Stele, which is an important cultural relic of minister Pei Du who served four emperors.

For ancient Chinese history, you must visit the Huanglongxi Ancient Town which is a 1,700 year old town full of ancient architecture and a royal feel. Located 30km southeast of Chengdu in Shuangliu County. The ancient town features old streets paved with stone and three ancient temples to visit. The ancient Buddha cave is also here. If you are hungry there are many places to eat local Chinese food while you walk around taking in the beauty of ancient China.

There are many historical and scenic places to visit in Chengdu China. These five places are just a small sample of the must-see places to go if you are traveling to the Sichuan area. China is a great place to learn about an old culture and eat great food. Many Chinese cities like Chengdu are also great shopping districts. There is something for everyone at Chengdu, China.
