3 unusual ways to enjoy and African safari

Incorporate a more unique wildlife activity into your African holiday experience, or focus your whole trip on a more unusual safari option and enjoy the benefits of being away from the crowds and truly immersing yourself into the rugged wilderness.

Okavango Delta, Botswana - Photo by flickr/Matthew Verso

For a more relaxing and peaceful African safari, take to the water on a canoe or boating adventure. The most famous areas for water based activities include the Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta in Botswana as well as the incredible Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. Also popular is the impressive Zambezi River which flows through Zambia and Zimbabwe. There are various camps and lodges located along the rivers which offer the more traditional game drives as well as water based activities. River safaris are often the highlight of many visitors’ trip to Southern Africa and iIt is hard to beat the thrill of floating right up to herds of elephants drinking from the water’s edge or getting close to crocodiles sunning themselves on the river bank (not too close of course).

Elephants at the Chobe National Park - Photo by flickr/zrim

Although motor boat safaris are the most common way of exploring the African waterways, some camps offer guests the opportunity to experience an exciting canoe safari. These are often a short trip in the morning or afternoon providing a variation on your overall African safari experience. Alternatively, for those with a real sense of adventure, take an organised canoe safari or trail and follow the activities of wildlife along the river, camping on its bank at night.

Many visitors to Africa express an interest to not just see, but have a close encounter with one of the country’s most majestic animals, the elephant. Two of the best ways to engage with these beautiful animals is to either take a trip to one of the elephant centres specialising in the animals’ welfare, or take an elephant safari. The elephant centres provide a great opportunity to interact with and assist in the daily caring of elephants, forming a unique day trip as part of your African safari experience. An elephant safari offers a thrilling means to explore the wilderness and experience the African bush through the eyes of the elephant. The animals are lovingly cared for by their guides, protected from the threat of poachers and as extremely social creatures thoroughly enjoy being able to explore the savannah with the other elephants as well as the guides and their guests.

Hippos at Kruger National Park - Photo by flickr/Poo-tee-weet?

The most famous of the of the more organised elephant safaris take place in Botswana’s Okavango Delta at Abu Camp and Baines Camp and in South Africa’s Kapama Private Game Reserve bordering the Kruger National Park. The Abu Camp has its own resident elephant herd offering guests the opportunity to interact with each individual, perfect for those who want to focus their African Safari on the elephant.

If you wish to explore the stunning vast plains of the African wilderness, a horse safari offers many benefits over the more traditional game drives but with an added sense of freedom and is for the eco conscious a very green way to enjoy a safari. Similar to the elephant safari, a horse safari allows you to blend in to the African bush and become less conspicuous to wildlife. Taking a horse safari allows you to cover more ground and is an exciting experience in itself. Gallop over incredible landscapes dotted with game, and ride up close to the animals and birds. Horse riding safaris are offered in Botswana, South Africa, Kenya and Malawi. You can choose to take an organised safari over a few days, or take a horse riding trip as part of an additional game viewing activity. Although the horses themselves have been professionally trained it is recommended that you have a little riding experience before partaking on such an experience.

Selfridges

Walkway to Selfridges - Photo by flickr/Jhapp40

Selfridges is located on Oxford Street, a 2-minute walk from Bond Street Underground or 5 minutes from Marble Arch, and offers shops under every category, including clothing, beauty, food, drink, and home and leisure. Selfridges is beautifully designed, and exudes luxury from outside and in. One of the unmissable stores to visit, whether a resident of the city or on a day-trip - even if just for a spot of lunch!

Harrods

Harrods - Photo by flickr/angelocesare

Harrods is another of the classic London department stores, and is located close to Knightsbridge Underground station. Although iconic in terms of the fashion that they sell, Harrods specialise in food and wine, children's clothes and sports gear as well as their beautiful selections of shoes, clothes and accessories. Harrods is definitely worth visiting, although their dress code may cause problems for the casually dressed.

Liberty

Liberty is situated in a beautiful old-style building on Regent street, a 4-minute walk from Oxford Circus Underground and an 8-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus Underground. Known for it's more exotic style of goods and decoration, Liberty has an atmosphere of comfort that makes you feel completely at home when shopping. Liberty of London should be visited simply because of their unique range of clothes and designs in their trademark Eastern-influenced bright, geometric prints.

Harvey Nichols

Harvey Nichols - Photo by Dave Hitchborne

Harvey Nichols refers to itself as a "one-stop-shop for the most exclusive brands in fashion, beauty and food", and is perhaps preferred by a younger group of shoppers than those who visit stores such as Harrods. Located close to Knightsbridge Underground, Harvey Nichols offers less of a range of products than Harrods, but ensures that these products are of the highest quality.

Fortnum and Mason

Fortnum and Mason are a little different to the previous department stores mentioned, as they do not deal in fashions or beauty but specialise in high quality foods and drinks. Located between Green Park and Piccadilly Circus Underground stations, Fortnum and Mason is the chosen food shop for British royalty and stocks luxury handmade seasonal gifts such as decorated Easter eggs, a whole range of tea-making products, and beautiful hampers in a range of sizes and prices.

Top British destinations for British Expatriates

Whether it's the lure of warmer weather or simply the desire to experience a new culture, a number of Brits decide to relocate to new countries every year. Though there is a variety of worthy locations for British expats, certain overseas destinations are especially popular.

Singapore

The Merlion of Singapore - Photo by flickr/Jianghao1
Well known for its clean living, modernised way of life, Singapore has a large expat community. The fifth wealthiest country in the world, childcare is very cheap and education standards are very high, making it an ideal location for those bringing up children. However, if the heat isn’t your cup of tea, you may want to consider another location, as Singapore’s tropical summers involve very humid, wet conditions and its monsoon season spans two months.

The UAE

Burj Dubai, UAE - Photo by flickr/Leandro's World Tour

British expats enjoy low taxation rates and a high standard of living in cities like Abu- Dhabi. The majority of this exciting and culturally diverse country is made up of mountainous desert land and it serves as the hub of much of the world’s international business. However, make sure you read up on the country’s legislative system, as laws in the UAE are often very strict. Also, if you have children, it is important to consider the fact that there is no free state-run childcare for non UAE residents.

South Africa

Long Street, Cape Town - Photo by flickr/Jorge Lascar

Another popular choice among British expats, South Africa has a reputation as being one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with miles of unspoiled landscape. You can also enjoy a relatively high standard of living on a fairly low budget there.  But unfortunately in some areas of South Africa, there is still a lot of poverty and crime. So, it pays to do your research in advance and to explore which areas carry the least risk for expats.

So, if you are fed up of long, cold winters, blustery autumns and rainy summers, then you might want to consider moving overseas to one of these popular locations. But be wary; it’s not as glamorous as it sounds. Planning your relocation is crucial and you must consider banking, taxes, the language barrier, the new climate and finding a residence before you make a decision and book those all-important flights.

International health insurance is something which should always be carefully considered when moving abroad. As an expat, private insurance from a reputable brand can give you piece of mind, even if you are relocating to a country with a free national health service. You can tailor your healthcare package to suit the specific needs of your family.

Leaving the country for a new life overseas is a big leap. It is easy to dream about starting afresh somewhere with better weather, but the reality of making a successful move is something else altogether. The key to a successful relocation is preparation. Find out as much as you can about the place you are moving too, and make sure to dig beneath the surface of the glossy brochures.

Diving In Malta

Considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world, Malta has many festivals and traditions that draw many tourists back time and again. One attractive draw card that keeps people intrigued is diving in Malta. The amount of shipwrecks off the coast is plentiful and extremely interesting to poke around in. The islands of Malta, Comino and Gozo have roughly 21 wrecks to be explored.

Diving In Malta - Photo by flickr/zell0ss

The Minesweeper

This is Malta’s most recent shipwreck. This was no accident though. The P2 Minesweeper was intentionally sunk a reasonable distance from the coast of Malta and now lies 37 metres below the surface. It’s easy diving for fit divers and is already gaining notoriety as one of the cooler wrecks to investigate. The Malta Marine Foundation have already begun the process to sink the P2 Minesweeper’s sister ship just off the coast of Comino. With the waters being an easy 20º, it looks like it will be a really nice and chilled diving experience for novice and skilled divers.

Um El Faroud

This wreck is one of the better kept secrets between the Maltese diving communities. When the wind blows strong making it really difficult for diving off any other parts of the coast, the Um El Faroud is the favoured shipwreck to visit. The site is sheltered by the Wied iz Zurrieq valley where it was sank after suffering an explosion in the dry dock in 1995. The Um El Faroud is an impressively large wreck at 115 metres long. The main deck alone is 25 metres and the entire ship requires more than one dive to discover the stories, trinkets and vibe of the huge wreck.

The HMS Submarines

Diving into shipwrecks is fun but there’s nothing cooler than diving a historical sunken submarine. The HMS Stubborn sank just off Malta on April 30th, 1946. 55 Metres deep, which means there is not much algae growing on it, making it easier to see it in its former glory. The other two are the HMS Eddy and St Angelo. These minesweepers were sunk due to mines in 1945 and they both lie at a depth of 58 metres. The two wrecks lie less than 100 metres apart and are considered to be two of the hottest diving sites off Malta. Divers have listed these on their diving bucket list.

The wrecks off Malta are wonderful to explore while the fish life is extremely colourful and educational. Scuba diving or deep wreck diving in Malta is a definite reason to visit. Even if you barely spend time on the mainland, the rocking beaches and coast still does it justice.

About writer: Vida Denning has not had her fair share of holidays and would love to go to Malta. Stay in a Malta Hotel, particularly the Topaz Hotel Malta, and do some serious wreck diving before enjoying cocktails under am umbrella on the awesome beaches.

Have a snack and a cold drink and go for a swim. You can kick back under the palms before you jump back on your jet ski. Take the ultimate Jet Boat Ride and go for extreme heart pounding action. Try wake surfing, or go parasailing. After you get back to shore you will want to head to the local watering hole for an authentic Australian ale.
